An attorney will accompany the client since the marriage interview is the most critical element of the process and may often be the difference between being approved or denied for a visa. Many times an alien has a petition or change of status approved in the U.S. but is denied a visa at the consulate or embassy because the client does not answer questions satisfactorily.
